What is Peppol and why is it becoming mandatory?

Peppol is a European network for e-invoicing. More and more countries are making e-invoicing mandatory for B2B transactions to combat tax fraud and reduce administrative burdens. In the Netherlands, e-invoicing is mandatory for government contracts executed for the national government. Municipalities, provinces, and water boards are also increasingly mandating e-invoicing. In Belgium, the use of e-invoicing for government contracts is already legally mandatory. From 2026, it will become mandatory in Belgium for all business-to-business (B2B) transactions.

What do Peppol providers cost on average?

Costs vary significantly per provider and depend on factors such as volume and additional services that are purchased. Providers of Peppol e-invoicing solutions also use different pricing models. It is therefore very difficult to quote specific amounts, but roughly expect €50-500/month for small businesses and €500-2000/month for medium-sized businesses.
